The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compares two thousand universities each year, from which the top 1,000 are selected for the ranking. Tampere University’s ranking remained unchanged from the previous ranking and is among the top 600.

ARWU ranks universities by several academic or research performance indicators, including papers indexed in major citation indices, highly cited researchers, as well as articles published in the Nature and Science journals. The comparison also takes into account Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals in Mathematics awarded to both researchers and universities’ alumni. The points awarded are proportioned to the number of researchers and teachers at the university.

Tampere University’s ranking result is based on the publication indicator and publications in the world's most prestigious scientific journals Nature and Science, which mainly publish in the natural sciences and medicine.

A discipline-specific version of the Shanghai ranking is also published. Tampere University’s best performers were telecommunication engineering, and library and information sciences, which were ranked in places 76-100. Public health, education, and communication sciences were placed in the next category of 100–150, while mechanical engineering, biological sciences, electric and electronic engineering, and transportation science and technology are in the top 200.

Seven Finnish universities were included in the list. The best performer was the University of Helsinki which was ranked the 82nd. The top 100 are given an exact ranking, after which the universities are ranked by the hundreds. The ranking uses the Web of Science database and its citation index to score publications.

In terms of publications, Tampere University placed third among the Finnish universities and its overall place is the fifth in Finland.

The Shanghai ranking was first published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in the early 2000s. Since 2009, the rankings have been produced by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.

This year, 38 new universities were added to the list. Eight universities from the US and two from the UK are in the top ten of the Shanghai ranking. The top three are the same as last year: Harvard University in the first place, Stanford in the second and the University of Cambridge in the third.
