Tampere University has improvement its placement in the Shanghai ranking. In the international university comparison, Tampere University now attained a position within the 500 best higher education institutions. The University got its best points in the category of scientific publications.

The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compares 2,500 universities each year, from which the top 1,000 are selected for the ranking.

Tampere University improved its ranking and rose to the category of 401–500 best universities. The top 100 universities are given an exact ranking, after which the universities are placed in groups of hundreds.

A discipline-specific version of the Shanghai ranking is also published. In the comparison published in summer, Tampere University did the best in the field of telecommunication engineering where it was placed in the 45th position. Communication Sciences and Information Science also came in the best one hundred within their field.

Seven Finnish universities were included in the list. Among Finnish institutions, the best performer was the University of Helsinki which was ranked the 92nd. Tampere University shares places 3–5 with the Universities of Oulu and Turku. In publications, in which Tampere University receives its best points, the ranking was the third in Finland.

ARWU ranks universities by several academic and research performance indicators, including the most highly cited researchers and articles published in the Nature and Science journals. Nature and Science – which are among the most highly esteemed scientific journals – publish articles especially in natural sciences and medicine.

The ranking uses the Web of Science database and its citation index to score publications.

The comparison also considers Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals in Mathematics awarded to both researchers and former university employees. The points awarded are reflected against the number of researchers and teachers at the university.

This year, the top three universities in the world are Harvard, Stanford, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Shanghai ranking was first published by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University in the early 2000s. Since 2009, the rankings have been produced by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
