The Finnish Education Evaluation Centre FINEEC (Karvi) will audit Tampere University's quality system in May 2023. The University is actively getting ready for the audit by carrying out joint assessments and preparing the self-assessment report. The audit panel will include solid expertise from the university sector and Sitra.

The FINEEC audit in 2023 is a developmental assessment designed to support continuous improvement of the University’s operations, and identification of good practices. The focus will be on the procedures used by the University to maintain and improve the quality of its operations.

The members of the audit panel conducting the audit at Tampere University are

  • Professor, DSc (Econ and Bus Admin) Markus Granlund, University of Turku (Chair)
  • Student Aino Karvonen, University of Helsinki
  • University Lecturer Doctor of Laws Sampo Mielityinen, University of Eastern Finland
  • Senior Lead, Helena Mustikainen, Sitra

The contact persons are Senior Advisor Hanna Väätäinen at FINEEC (see FINEEC website: Audit at Tampere University 2023) and Development Manager Leena Ahrio at Tampere University. (Read more Quality Management at Tampere University).

Comprehensive and development-oriented assessment together

The audit provides a comprehensive assessment of the University’s activities: education, research, social interaction and impact, and the overall quality system. The audit also includes an optional assessment item. At Tampere University, it is “Curriculum and its guidance”. In the third round of national audits, there is a new element; peer learning, which was implemented together with Dublin City University (DCU) on the theme “Digital learning opportunities”.

Tampere University’s strengths, areas for improvement and good practises have been identified in developmental assessments together with students and stakeholder representatives.

“Development-oriented assessments are a systematic way to develop operations and share good practices at Tampere University”, says Provost Jarmo Takala.

The self-assessment report included in the audit has been compiled together with the community. Chair of the Audit Project Steering Group Jukka Mäkinen sees the preparation as valuable:

“There has been a rich debate in the community, which has allowed identifying the strengths and areas for improvement in our practices, as well as successful development actions. The joint discussion brings quality management closer to our daily lives”, he says.

Audit visit in May

The site visit of the auditing panel will be organised on 10–11 May 2023. During its two-day visit, the panel will conduct comprehensive interviews with students, staff members, and stakeholders of the University. FINEEC’s audit processes have been streamlined and audit teams are assembled to combine a broad understanding of higher education operations.

“The audit process provides us with valuable insights for continuous improvement of University’s operations from our own community, stakeholders and auditors”, Development Manager Leena Ahrio says.
