Tampere University was ranked 37th in the recent Times Higher Education Young University 2020 ranking of the world’s best universities that have been in operation for less than 50 years.

The Times Higher Education Young University 2020 ranking compares young universities from around the world that are 50 years old or younger. This was the second time that the new Tampere University, which was created by the merger of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology and started in early 2019, was included in the ranking.

Last year, Tampere University ranked 34th among the hundreds of young universities in the world, but this year there were 475 universities in the ranking, compared to 414 in the previous year. From Finland, Aalto University was also included in the ranking and came 28th.

Nanyang Technological University in Singapore topped the THE Young University 2020 ranking. Paris Sciences et Lettres - PSL Research University Paris came second and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was the third. The same universities made up the top three also in the previous year, but in a different order.

The comparison of new universities is based on the same 13 performance indicators as the overall Times Higher Education ranking, but with a lower weighting of the reputation indicator.
