Tampere University celebrates new academic year virtually

Tampere University will organise the opening ceremony of the new academic year at 12.30 on Tuesday, 7 September. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony and other programme will be virtual events.

President Mari Walls’s speech opens the new academic year. Director Mari Pantsar from Sitra gives the keynote speech. Iiris Taubert, Chair of the Student Union of Tampere University TREY, will bring the students’ perspective to the ceremony.

The Alumnus/Alumna of the Year nomination will also be unveiled. The programme concludes with “On the Way to the Opening Ceremony”, a short film produced by Sorin Sirkus.

Before the Opening Ceremony, Tampere University’s alumni will hold their first meeting of the autumn. The event is themed “City of the Future”.

On the opening day, several awards will be presented to members of the university community. The City of Tampere’s Research Grant Committee awards the authors of distinguished doctoral dissertations. The University of Tampere Foundation and the Industrial Research Fund at Tampere University of Technology will each award prizes for the best dissertations and to scholars with impressive publication merits.
Tampere University’s Social Impact Award is also be presented and the Student Union of Tampere University TREY awards the best teachers.
