Sustainable development ranking highlights societal impact
The QS Sustainability Ranking has two categories: social impact measures and environmental sustainability measures that comprise education, research, and other activities. The ranking result is formed of more detailed indicators inside these categories.
In social impact, Tampere University came into the 270th place, which is better than its overall score. In it, the best placement and best points come from educational impact. The University also gets good points for equality.
“The result is delightful nationally and internationally. Our success in social impact reflects our community’s long-term work on social sustainability and equality, but our strong partnership work also boosts our ranking,” says Matias Nurminen, Senior Specialist on Sustainable Development and Innovation Culture.
The QS Ranking also uses research and other indicators.
“In the category of environmental sustainability measures, we are also making progress in many respects even though much still remains to be done in the coming years,” Nurminen says.
According to Nurminen, the results of the new ranking should be analysed more closely by the community. University rankings in sustainability have been an important tool which have enabled developing different aspects of sustainability.
The QS Sustainability Ranking ranks 700 higher education institutions worldwide. It includes nine Finnish universities.
Tampere University’s total placement in the QS Sustainability Ranking was in the category of 381–400.
At the beginning of 2022, Tampere University was involved in Times Higher Education Magazine’s sustainable development ranking.
QS rankings are carried out by the Quacquarelli Symonds organisation.
