Specific topics and research findings in the fields of knowledge management, security research and sustainable development will be featured on the academic Zoom channel of the Leadership Symposium on Wednesday 8 September.

“The academic thematic sessions will bring a new forum for discussion at the Leadership Symposium,” says Harri Talonen, Director of Development and Director of the Symposium.

The sixteen sessions will cover such topics as, eg, data and leadership, resilience and crisis preparedness in Finnish healthcare, fire safety, cyber security, and circular and bioeconomy.

The speakers will come from Tampere Universities, and, for example, the Police University College, other universities, and government research institutes. Business Tampere and the Tampere Region Safety and Security Cluster have been involved in the arrangements.

Two ways to prepare for the unexpected

In a session on resilience and crisis preparedness in the Finnish healthcare system, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, DSci (Tech)  Ossi Heino will talk about preparing for the unexpected. Heino works in the Resilience, crisis preparedness and security of supply of the Finnish health system (RECPHEALS) research project.

“Do we have the capacity to prepare for the possibility that things will take us by surprise again?” Heino asks.

“In the case of COVID-19, we could see that our contingency plans were not exactly suited to a health crisis. We had not planned for this specific kind of a crisis and were taken by surprise,” Heino says.

The idea that arose is that we should respond to this shortcoming by updating our plans to reflect the COVID-19 experiences. But would that make us any better prepared for the possibility of being surprised by a new threat in the future?

“I think we should also develop capabilities that are not dependent on available plans. Our ability to know and anticipate the future is limited, and that is exactly what we should be prepared for,” Heino points out.

The channel can be followed in real time

In the same session, Nina Helander, Professor of Information and Knowledge Management, will talk about information management in health crises. Researcher, Lic.Med. Soila Karreinen asks what is expected of healthcare managers while Docent Pauli Rautiainen asks whether an Act on Pandemics would have made it easier to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. The session is chaired by Assistant Professor Liina-Kaisa Tynkkynen.

Events in the Academic channel will be broadcast live on the Leadership Symposium’s prospectum platform.

The first hour-long thematic session will start at 10.30. There will be a half-hour break between sessions.
