Speaker: Andrea STŘELCOVÁ

Researcher at Charles University and TU Berlin

Host by: Yuzhuo CAI

Ajunct Professor and Senior Lecturer at Higher Education Group (HEG), Faculty of Management and Business, Tampere University

Science, technology and innovation are at the core of the People’s Republic of China development policy. As a result, China has overtaken the EU in research and development spending and surprised the world with several research breakthroughs. The country, governed by an authoritarian Party-State regime, continues to evolve into a scientific powerhouse. How does the European community in China tackle the new developments in policies and in practice? How do institutions (universities, research institutes or funding agencies) react? And how do European research talents get acquainted with the new reality of China, going global?

This public lecture will provide an overview of recent developments in China from the European perspective. We will look at the EU level in research and innovation as well as the strategies of several EU countries (member states) in a comparative perspective to see how they deal with China’s rise into a global scientific powerhouse. We will talk about how different European actors across EU and its member states shape ongoing internationalisation “with Chinese characteristics”, with different levels of cooperation and competition in political dialogues, institutions and people across countries and scientific disciplines.

It is also a pre-event of the upcoming Sino-Nordic Innovation Forum (15-17, June 2020) .
