What is open science? Is open science more than just open access to research publications? Should students know about the principles of open science?

The open science policy of the Tampere higher education community guides the activities of the entire higher education community. Openness in science is part of good scientific practice, and therefore also part of the skills of the student and researcher.

Open science is an umbrella term for activities aimed at promoting openness to science and research. Science should be open and accessible to all, including those outside the scientific community, and that is what these principles aim to achieve.

For students, key aspects of open science are the openness of publications, openness of research methods and data, and copyright issues. The library's new guide Opiskelija ja avoin tiede (so far only in Finnish) provides information on open science in general and in particular on areas likely to be relevant to studies.
