The new online publication of the Academy of Finland-funded Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX) was launched with three articles published in autumn. HEX Handbook is a peer-reviewed scholarly publication whose articles deal with the history of experiences as a perspective to the past and a broader field of research. The new handbook is published online.

The Digital Handbook of the History of Experience is an online peer-reviewed scientific publication that aims to develop the conceptualisation and methodology of the history of experience and to bring new perspectives to research topics.

HEX Handbook provides a rapid publishing gateway for scientific insights into research concepts and methodology. Short case studies will also be published online. The Handbook aims to produce concise texts.

“As its name indicates, the purpose of the publication is to act like a handbook so that researchers who want to get acquainted with the history of experiences will quickly learn about the key concepts. At the same time, we are highlighting the conceptual work – i.e., the definition of concepts – we are doing at the Centre of Excellence,” says University Researcher Sari Katajala-Peltomaa from HEX.

“We emphasise discussion and the development of concepts and methodology. Researchers can write commentary articles on the texts to further the conceptual work,” adds Postdoctoral Research Fellow Mikko Kemppainen.

In addition to Katajala-Peltomaa and Kemppainen, Johanna Annola, Reetta Eiranen and Rob Boddice are also members of the editorial board.

Peer-reviewed openings from the field of research

The English-language publication contains three categories of writing: concepts and theoretical approaches, methodology, and empirical case studies and source analyses.
The platform is seeking writers from among researchers who are interested in the history of experiences. The peer-reviewers are scholars in the HEX community and co-operation partners. The editorial board makes the publication decisions.

In September and October, HEX Handbook published the first three articles written by Minna Harjula and Heikki Kokko, Rob Boddice, and Sari Katajala-Peltomaa and Raisa Toivo. The next articles will be published in November and December. The editorial board aims to publish new texts every month.

The Centre of Excellence is researching the history of experiences. The research focuses on three big social constructions, which are (lived) religion, (lived) nation and (lived) welfare state. The prefix ‘lived’ refers to the way social constructions and institutions are always reflected and made through experiences.

The Centre of Excellence in the History of Experiences (HEX) is part of the Academy of Finland’s Centre of Excellence Programme and hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC) at Tampere University.
