The Helsingin Sanomat Foundation has awarded Tampere University a grant of €59.000 to establish an education programme in data journalism. The project aims to open the widest data journalism education pathway in Finland.

“This is a great vote of confidence from the Foundation to Tampere University as an educator of journalists. It is a new breakthrough,” says University Lecturer Marko Ala-Fossi who directs the new project.

The “Covid 19: local crisis information and news ecosystem” project led by Professor Jaana Hujanen received €196.000. The project will be carried out as a collaboration between the Universities of Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere.

In the two-phase call for applications in spring 2021, the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation invited researchers to submit applications related to crisis communication and journalism. Fifteen projects responded to the thematic call.

The total amount granted was €806.000. Information on awarded grants
