Engineering and information science succeed in the QS Ranking – all broad fields of Tampere University were included

Engineering and Technology is the best performing field at Tampere University, the new QS University Ranking finds. The result was given in QS’s discipline-specific ranking, where Tampere University’ fields were ranked in all five broad subject areas. When comparing more specific subjects, Library and Information Management comes in at number 12 among the world’s universities. Communication and Media Studies also rank among the top 100 in its field.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 lists subjects from 1,543 universities and higher education institutions. Institutions are ranked across five broad subject areas and more specific subjects, of which QS listed 51 this year.

Tampere University received a published score in all five broad subject areas. As previously, the best performer was Engineering and Technology which came in the 297th place. Medicine and Life Sciences were in the 343rd place and Natural Sciences in the 369th place. Both Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences and Management were placed in the group of 401–450 places. 

Information science continues at the top of the world 

QS Ranking divides the broad subject areas into more specific subjects. Information science continues to do well and was placed the 12th in the world. Communication and Media Studies placed among the hundred best in its category. Education was the third best performer at the University and ranked in the places of 151–200.

Of the fields in Engineering and Technology, materials science and electrical and electronic engineering were placed among the 250 best performers. Computer science improved its position the most at Tampere University and it was placed among the best 300 in its field. Medicine, psychology and English language and literature were also placed in the same category in their ranking. 

The results of the QS Ranking are based on such indicators as academic reputation, graduates’ reputation among employers, citations per research paper and the productivity and impact of the published work of researchers. In the broad subject areas, QS now used the international research network as an indicator for the first time. 

English language and literature received the best points in citations at Tampere University. Information science is doing well in terms of academic reputation while communication and media studies received a high score from employers. 

QS Ranking is carried out by the independent QS Quacquarelli Symonds organisation. 

In the overall comparison published in June 2021, Tampere University placed 414th, i.e. among the best third in the world. At that time, QS listed 1,300 universities worldwide.
