Elina Kontu is a professor of psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences who focuses on autism spectrum disorders and the psychology of developmental disabilities. The main areas of research and development of her research group are sensory interaction, psychosocial rehabilitation, flexible learning solutions, and demanding support.

“An equal and decent life is the fundamental right of everyone. Disability should not be an obstacle for anyone to have the same opportunities for a good life regardless of disability,” Kontu says.

Societal equality can be achieved if the situation of disadvantaged people is improved through systematic and targeted positive actions. This is also a legal obligation.

According to Kontu, current research strongly suggests that the interaction of experts and the way they communicate and encounter people needing support has a meaningful and beneficial effect.

“Our studies show that a dialogic and dynamic interaction between a person needing support and an expert is effective. The expert can adapt and develop his or her interaction so that he or she is better able to help the person who needs support,” says Kontu.

In addition, Kontu and her research group have established the wide national and international research network ANDANTE.

“Our aim is to develop high-impact rehabilitation and pedagogical pathways that improve the quality of life and well-being of children, young people and adults by developing co-operation between different actors,” Kontu says.
