Remember that data can be shared with others only if you have agreed with your collaborators to do so. Also, make an agreement with your group members, what license you will use when you open your data. The license defines the terms and conditions the data can be used. However, not all data needs to be open. You cannot share confidential information.
CC0 waiver is the most efficient way of facilitating reuse of your data, but Creative Commons 4.0 is also widely used for data. For more information, please check our guide on How to select a Creative Commons License?
Check the recommendations of the publishers, learned societies, and funders of your own field of science. If you are not familiar with the services, check for example:

Be Fair to your love
Show love to your data by being “fair”. Follow the international FAIR-principles. The purpose of these principles is that your data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Re-usable. The data is fair when:

data has a persistent identifier such as DOI or URN

data is in an open file format
-
data is described with rich metadata
-
data has a license facilitating a re-use
-
data can be found in searchable resource and is available in a data archive

Thursday 13.2.
Don’t conceal your love for data but tell about it openly. If you use data collected by someone else, tell about it by citing it. The citation gives credit to a data creator and facilitates tracking the usage and impact of the data. Elements of a data citation are as follows: name of the original creator(s) of data, title of the dataset, version, year of data collection, data collector, producer and distributor. Data archives have their own general guidelines on how to cite data.

Wednesday 12.2.
Keep your loved ones safe! Take good care of your data by finding it a suitable and safe home. Take care of back-up’s, safe handling and transfer of files. Allow access to your data only to those individuals it is necessary.
If you are processing sensitive or confidential data, a risk assessment is used to determine the required protective measures for the entire lifecycle of the data.

Tuesday 11.2.
Laws and rules binds your relationship with data as well as people. Make sure that you are aware of the legislation related to your data:

You own all the necessary rights to use your data

Research data that is factual by it’s nature, is not necessary covered by copyright law, since data is not always considered as distinguishable original work. However, your data might have Data base rghts.

Agreements on rights of use of the data should be made before you start collecting or producing the data. If you have personal or confidential data, make sure that only a limited number of people can access the data. Even though your relationship with your data is public, you shouldn’t expose too detailed information to others

If you work with external funding, be aware of the Intellectual Property Assignment

Data can also be protected by trade secrets legislation

Monday 10.2.
There are so many places where you can collect your research data. You can do your field work on streets, suburbs, bars, offices, jungles and mountains, for example. Access to the field is not always easy and data collection requires plenty of effort.
Take an alternative approach to find research data. You can find research data to love and cherish by using research data finder tools such as Etsin. Data archives are also a good starting point. Have a look, what is available in Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD) search portal Aila.
Data journals (such as Data in Brief or Scientific data) offer detailed descriptions of research data and their availability. Scientific articles may have a data statement section explaining the availability of the data used in the article. A reference list of an article may contain data citations.
Re-using already existing data is an ecological and economical choice. Create something new and found collaborators by re-using data. Feel the burning data-love in your heart!
