Tampere University’s communication and media sciences were placed in the positions of 51–100 and did the best among the university’s fields in the recent QS World University Rankings by Subject comparison.

Iiris Ruoho, head of the communication sciences unit, is not surprised by the good result because communication sciences have also done well in previous rankings.

“This is in line with what has previously been said about research in our field; people author a lot of publications and the research is of high standard. This ranking shows that the positive developments continue. We are happy with the result and work hard for it. Of course, we are very proud that our communication and media research has been internationally noted,” Ruoho says.

The annual QS World University Rankings by Subject compares the best universities in the world in 48 fields of science. The rankings in 2019 concerned the year 2018 when the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology were still separate universities.

The QS comparison of 2019 involved a thousand universities. The QS ranking is based on information from the Scopus database and the QS’s global surveys of academics and employers.

New fields in the QS ranking included education (Tampere University came in places 201–250) and materials science (places 351–400).
