Climate University wants education of climate change for everyone
Finland aims for carbon neutrality in 2035. In order to achieve the goal, information and education on climate change and sustainable development should reach as many citizens as possible. The open education developed by Climate University plays an important role in that.
"Climate University strives to produce and develop teaching materials that can help control climate change and promote sustainable development. The interdisciplinary know-how of the participating universities has been utilized in the preparation of the courses and materials. The aim is also to create a teachers’ network and to promote the transition of lessons learned from schools to working life", says Miikka Dal Maso, Professor of physics at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
To date, the Climate University community has produced nine different courses to teach climate change and sustainable development. The topics of the courses include the fundamentals of sustainability and climate change, the climate and sustainability crisis from the perspective of systemic thinking, the use of open climate data and climate communication. The Climate University online courses are accessible through the common Moodle platform of Finnish universities (digicampus.fi).
Tampere University is organizing a virtual closing workshop for the first phase of the Climate University project on 9-10 December 2020, where the results and future of the project will be reviewed and the teaching of climate change and sustainable development now and in the future will be discussed.
Climate University project is led by the University of Helsinki. The community consists of Tampere University, Aalto University, LAB University of Applied Sciences, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Metropolia, Turku University of Applied Sciences, University of Eastern Finland, University of Jyväskylä, University of Oulu and University of Turku.
Further funding is being sought for the project.
