Loan services

You need a library card and pin code for borrowing. If you want to borrow books from different units of Tampere University Library, you need to activate your card separately to databases of former University of Tampere Library, former Tampere University on Technology Library and former Tampere University of Applied Sciences Library.

Library card

If you are a student of Tampere University or TAMK, you can activate your student card to work as your library card at Library’s service desk. Other customers can fill a library card application online. Take your ID with you, when you’re coming to activate or pick up your card. By giving your personal data to the Library’s patron register, you are bound to comply with the Library’s service rules.

Library card password / pin code

We’ll set a password / pin code for your library card. You’ll need the pin code when borrowing books or checking your own loans on TuniLib. When you have gotten your library card, log in to TuniLib and change your pin code.

If you have forgotten your pin, come to the Library service desk and take you library card and ID with you. We don’t reset pin codes by phone, email or chat.

Borrowing materials

You can borrow books with lending machines or at the service desks. You are responsible for the items borrowed with your card, so you need to keep on track with due dates and renew or return the loans on time. If you have 10 € or more unpaid library fees, you are not able to borrow, renew or reserve books.

Reserving

You can make a reservation for a book that is currently on loan in TuniLib. Short loans and books on reference collection cannot be reserved.

When your reservation is available for pick up, you’ll get a notice by email or by mail. From the notice you’ll see the pick up location and the last day for pick up. Normally the time for picking up is one week. Notices are not sent out during weekends or weekday holidays; e.g. if the requested book becomes available on Friday the customer will be notified the following Monday. You can check the current situation of you reservation from TuniLib.

You can find your request on the shelf under your family name and borrow it using the self-service machine. If you don’t want your reservations put on the self service pick up shelf, please notice us library@tuni.fi.

You can also reserve items from Linna's closed storage in TuniLib or at Library’s service desk at Linna.

Canceling a reservation

In TuniLib you can cancel a reservation that is not yet available for pick up. When you have already received a notice of item available for pick up, you can cancel your reservation only by contacting the Library. Items that are not picked up carry a fine of 1 €.

Renewing

You can renew your loans in TuniLib or by online form or by sending us an email library@tuni.fi. You can renew a loan if there is no reservations for the item and your fines are under 10 €. Course book loans can be renewed 10 times. Short loan copies cannot be renewed.

If you cannot renew your loans because of a service break in database or of another technical problem, you can renew them by phone, or by email. A break or a technical problem is not a reason to cancel the possible overdue fees.

Returning

Return your loans on the due date at latest. You can return the books with returns machine or to service desk. If you return loans to other library unit than where you borrowed them, notice that the return doesn’t necessary register on real time and your loans may show on your own loans in TuniLib until the next working day of the library.

If the library is closed, you can return books to returns boxes. Books returned to the boxes will be handled so that the return registers on the latest working day of the library unit. Books can also be returned by mail, but please don’t send them to Parcel Point. If you return books by mail, you are responsible for the books until they arrive to the Library.

Shortloans, books from reference collection, devices and keys must be returned to the unit they were borrowed from.

Courtesy notice for the approaching due date

You’ll receive a courtesy notice of the approaching due date for the course book loans and the general collection loans at least two days before the due date by e-mail. If there are problems with the arrival of the notice, you are still responsible for returning or renewing the loans in time and also bound to pay the possible overdue charges.

Overdue notice

We’ll send you four overdue notices of overdue items. You are responsible for returning or renewing your loans in time, so even if the overdue notice has not arrived the overdue charges have to be paid.
