To borrow books you need a library card. The same card is valid in all our Library units.

Borrow, request, return, renew
Library card
If you are a student of Tampere University or TAMK, you can activate your student card as your library card at Library’s customer service. Take your ID with you, when you’re coming to activate or pick up your card. By giving your personal data to the Library’s patron register, you are bound to comply with the Library’s service rules.
Pin code
- You need t library card's 4-digit PIN code only when borrowing material at self service.
- If you don't have a PIN yet or have forgotten it, you can set a new PIN through Andor by logging in, selecting 'My Account' and then selecting 'Update Password / PIN'.
- Alternatively, you can set / change your PIN by contacting the library.
Borrowing materials
You can borrow books with self service machines or at the customer service. You are responsible for the items borrowed with your library card, so you need to keep track of due dates and renew or return your loans on time. If you have 10 € or more of unpaid library fees, you are not able to borrow, renew or request books.

You can request a book that is currently on loan through Andor. Short loans and books in the reference collection cannot be requested.
When your request is available for pick up, you’ll be notified by email or by mail. On the notice you’ll see the pick up location and the last day for pick up. Normally the time for picking up is one week. You can check the current status of you request in Andor.
You can find your request on the shelf under your family name and borrow it using the self-service machine. If you don’t want your requests on the self service pick up shelf, please contact library customer service library [at] tuni.fi.
Cancelling a request
You can cancel requests you don't need in Andor.

If you are a student or staff member of the University of Tampere or TAMK, sign in with your tuni user account.

Other customers sign in either using the email address you've given to the library or your library card number.

When logging in with a library card, if you do not have a password yet or you don't remember your password, enter some character(s) in the password field and you will be prompted to set a new password.
You can renew your loans in Andor or by sending us an email library [at] tuni.fi. You can renew a loan if there are no requests for the item and your fines are under 10 €. Short loans can't be renewed.
If you can't renew your loans because of a service break in Andor or another technical problem, you can renew them by phone, or by email. A service break or a technical problem is not a reason to cancel the possible overdue fees.
Return your loans on the due date at latest. You can return the books using the self-service machine or to the customer service.
If the library is closed, you can use the return boxes (see below). Books returned to the boxes will be registered as returned on the previous working day of the library unit. Books can also be returned by mail, but please don’t send them to Parcel Point. If you return books by mail, you are responsible for the books until they arrive to the Library.
Short loans, books from reference collection, devices and keys must be returned to the library unit they were borrowed from.
Courtesy notice for the approaching due date
You’ll receive a courtesy notice of the approaching due date for course book and general collection loans 4 days before the due date and in the morning of the due date. If there are problems with the arrival of the notice, you are still responsible for returning or renewing the loans in time and also bound to pay the possible overdue charges.
Overdue notice
We’ll send you four notices of overdue items. You are responsible for returning or renewing your loans in time. Even if the overdue notice has not arrived, the overdue fines have to be paid.
Book return boxes
When the Library is closed you can leave your loans to the book return boxes located outside our library units.
- Linna: beside the main entrance of Linna building on Kalevantie street side
- Arvo: near the front door of Arvo building, Teiskontie street side
- Hervanta: in the elevator lobby on the 1st floor of Kampusareena. When the building is closed, you can leave your loans in a box labelled "Library returns" outside the entrance on the Main Building side.
- TAMK Main campus: beside the Library's main entrance on Service Street. When the building is closed, you can leave your loans in the book return box at the main entrance of the campus, Teiskontie street side.
- TAMK Mediapolis library doesn't have a book return box. When the library is closed you can return books to our other library units if needed.
Interlibrary services
If we haven’t got a book or other resource you need on our collections, we can order it for you from another library. You can order interlibrary loans by filling out an online form. Please see the interlibrary loan fees on our fees list below.

Library’s service rules
Right of use
Tampere University Library is a research library, which services and collections are available for all. Primarily, the Library serves the students, researchers and teachers of Tampere Universities.
A registered customer of the Library is bound by the regulations and other guidelines relating to the services. The library card is personal and the customer is responsible for its use and for the material borrowed with it.
The basic services of the library are free of charge, but there are fee-based services, too. Please check the list of fees.
A customer may be denied the right to use the Library if they fail to follow the library rules and loan periods, or if their fine amount exceeds the price list limit.
Customer data, customer register
To register as a library customer the library staff need to check your photo ID and get your contact information. The library has the right to include social security numbers in customer register. A customer under 15 years of age needs the approval of a guardian, which is saved to library database.
The library must be notified of any change in personal data (e.g., name, address or other contact information) without delay.
The library's loan register is used for loan management purposes only. Personal data details are never given to any outsider. The patron may verify, in accordance with the Personal Data Act, what personal data has been entered into the register.

Loan services, library units
The patron is bound to comply with the loan periods and either return or renew the borrowed items on the due date at the latest. Overdue fee is charged also if you haven’t been able to renew your loan due to service break on the library system or other technical problem including non-delivery of advance notice of upcoming due date.
Library units’ opening hours, contact info and information about customer spaces are updated to the Library’s websites.

E-resources
When using electronic resources, the patron has to comply with the conditions specified in the license agreement and copyright laws. More specified guidelines relating to the remote and local use of electronic resources are posted on the library's web pages.
Information services, information searching skills
Information services gives guidance about the use of databases and other information resources, performs data searches, gives lessons in information retrieval and information literacy and organizes library tours. More information about training and guidance is given on our webpages.

If the amount of unpaid fees is 10 euros or more, the customer will be banned from borrowing. A customer who is prohibited from borrowing, cannot loan, reserve or renew loans. The ban on borrowing is lifted when payments are made in full or reduced below the loan ban limit. The unreturned material will be transferred to the collection office in accordance with the University's financial administration practices. In connection with invoicing, late fees related to the material will be also invoiced.
The fees charged by the library are based on the Universities Act (558/2009), the State Basic Fees Act (150/1992) and the Government Decree (1082/2009) on fees charged for the activities of universities and Act 513/1999 on debt collection.
