Materials

The collections of the Library include materials from the fields of study of the Universities. For information about printed material and e-books, see search service Andor. Use the Databases A-Z list to discover the databases available to you.
Library materials
Course books refer to books in the curriculum. In addition to printed course books, the Library will acquire a corresponding e-book if available.
Linna unit acquires material for the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, the Faculty of Management and Business, the Faculty of Education and Culture and the Faculty of Social Sciences. You can find the course book collection and the short loan collection on the first floor of Linna library.
Arvo unit acquires material for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology. The medical doctor's specialization certificate requirement materials are acquired to the general collection. Course books in Arvo are located on the floor zero.
Hervanta unit acquires material for the Faculty of Built Environment and the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. The course books can be found in the general collection. You can recognize them by the yellow tape at the top of the book's spine. Short loan copies of course books are located on the first floor of the Library.
TAMK library units' course books are on the same shelves as the general collection books. They are marked with yellow and orange stickers. The course books are acquired for the degree programmes of the Polytechnic.
The loan period of course books is 14 days. Return short loans on next business day by 10:00 AM.
E-resources include the essential materials for teaching, studying and researching. In Andor search service you can search for books and articles by topic. Databases (journal collections, e-books databases, reference databases, portals, statistics, etc.) can be found on the databases list.
You can use e-resources on computers at the Library and other premises at Tampere University, Tampere University of Applied Sciences and Tampere University Hospital (using IP based access). If you are using licensed resources outside campus, log in with tuni user account. Also, log in with your tuni account to the wireless network of the University and the University of Applied Sciences.
For external users, e-resources are available on Library's premises, with the exception of ClinicalKey Student, Ellibs e-book collection, Safari e-books, Skillsoft and MustRead.

Instructions for using e-resources
Linna
- The General collection has material mainly in the fields of information sciences, leadership sciences, social sciences, pedagogical sciences, linguistics, literature and history.
- The collection is located on the second floor, except for books on history which are located on the third floor.
Linna school book collection
- The books in the Finnish school book collection are used in teaching practice.
- The school books are arranged on the shelf by subject.
- Older and lesser used school books are in storage.
- The collection is located on the first floor near the course books.
Arvo
- The General collection of Arvo library has materials on medicine, life sciences and health sciences.
- The collection is located in the library hall on floor 0.
Hervanta
- Hervanta library collections include materials in the fields of architecture, automation, biotechnology, engineering, materials technology, construction technology, electrical engineering, information management, information technology, manufacturing economics and environmental and energy technology.
- The borrowable books are placed on the ground floor of the Library.
Hervanta TUT Collection
- The collection includes TUT's master's theses, licentiate theses and dissertations as well as study notes, institute reports and other university publications.
- P TUT DI - Master thesis

- P TUT Tri - Doctoral theses
- The loan period for master, graduate, licentiate and doctoral dissertations is 28 days. P TUT archives collection's publications are not loaned out (university publications, institute reports, study notes, dissertations and monographs).
Pori collections
- The Pori designated collections are located in the University Consortium of Pori Library and can not be borrowed in Tampere.
TAMK
Main campus
- TAMK Main campus library's collections include material in the fields of technology, business, forestry and the environment, education, nursing, healthcare, bioanalytics, music, physiotherapy, radiography, laboratory, tourism and rural industries, household and consumer services, nutrition and office services.
Mediapolis library
- Mediapolis library collections include material on film and television, visual design, digital media, music production and visual arts.
- The library is located on the 1st floor of Mediapolis.
The loan period of books in the general collection is 28 days.
The reference collection contains, among other things, reference books, dictionaries, statistics, bibliographies and official documents.
Linna
The reference collection is located on the third floor. The material is mainly meant to be read in the Library.
- On Andor's location information there is a text yölaina (= overnight loan) for the books which can be borrowed
- Linna reference library also contains dissertations from the Tampere University. The reference library also contains archival copies of unpublished licentiate theses and master's theses from 2010-2018.
- Older (unpublished online) theses have been placed in storage and can be reserved for reading in Andor. Newer theses can be read openly online at Trepo or on separate thesis access computers in Linna, Arvo and Hervanta.

Arvo
Reference collection includes medical matricles and disease classifications and thesis. Reference books can not be borrowed.
Hervanta
- General reference books such as standards, general encyclopedias, dictionaries, business and organizational directories, Finnish law and regulations and statistics are located in the bottom floor of the library. General reference books can not be borrowed.
- The reference books for technology and natural sciences which are part of the general collection can be borrowed.
TAMK
- TAMK has an electronic reference library; reference books, manuals, dictionaries and directories are available as e-books and services.
New reference material is acquired in electronic form if possible. The e-reference books can be found in the Andor search service and in subject guides.
In our Library you can find a comprehensive collection of domestic and foreign journals.
You can find the location and availability information of the printed journals in our Andor search service. You can also find the links to e-journals there.
Printed journals can not be borrowed, but they can be copied and scanned at the library's premises.
Newspapers are not loaned out.
Linna
In Linna library the main dailies Aamulehti, Dagens Nyheter, Helsingin Sanomat, Hufvudstadsbladet, Liberation, Le Monde, El Pais and Die Zeit are available on floor 2 on the building's Kalevantie side. The latest issue is on the cabinet door and inside the cabinet there are present and previous months' issues.
Newspaper collection and reading room
The Library has a large collection of newspapers and their older volumes. It is located on the City centre campus, floor 0 of the Main building, along with the Newspaper Reading Room. The collection includes the most important domestic daily newspapers. Read more about the Newspaper collection
Arvo
In Arvo library Aamulehti, Helsingin Sanomat and Mediuutiset are available to the customers. Aamulehti and Helsingin Sanomat are stored for a week, Mediuutiset for the current year.
TAMK
TAMK Main campus library has Aamulehti, Helsingin sanomat, Maaseudun tulevaisuus and Kauppalehti in its collection. The newspapers can be found on the newspaper balcony, located to the right of the Library's main entrance.
Mediapolis library has Aamulehti in its' collection.
Hervanta
Newspapers Aamulehti and Helsingin sanomat can be found on the ground floor of the library. The newspapers have a one-week storage period.
Tampere higher education community recommends publishing theses online. You can find all theses of Tampere Universities through Andor search service. There you can find the links to the those published online and the location information of the older and paper versions.

EU collection
Tampere University Library is one of the European Union Documentation Centres. The printed EU collection is located on the 3rd floor of the Linna library.
You can find the books and journals in the collection via Andor. Most of the material in the collection is available for borrowing.

The information service provides small-scale information retrieval based on the information and order of the customer, as well as advises and guides the use of EU information sources.

Linna
There are several special and donated collections in the Linna library. Aramata collection can be borrowed and the other special collections can only be read in the library's premises. These materials are ordered from customer service.
