How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here?

I've been in Tampere since August 2019. The allure of the Nordic life, the breadth of choice offered by the Gender Studies programme and the research opportunities in Tampere were my biggest reasons for coming here. That scholarships for international students were/are aplenty was also a huge factor in wanting to study at TAU.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

I study Gender Studies (sukupuolentutkimus) at Tampere University. I chose it because wanting to further gendered equity is a formative part of who I am.

What do you like most about Tampere and Finland? What has been the most surprising or different thing about living here?

I often tell people Tampere is my 'goldilocks' city in Finland. It's, to me, strikes the perfect balance between being a tranquil getaway, and having a city-scene. I love how very accepting the city seems of differences and how it doesn't expect you to 'be' anyone or anything. That Tampere allowed me to experiment with who I am and want to be without being judgment, was what I found most surprising about living here.

What are your hobbies in Tampere? Have you tried out any new hobbies after coming here?

Before coming to Tampere, I was quite an indoors-y person who enjoyed the solitude that comes with reading non-fiction or laughing at memes. Tampere has awakened the nature-lover in me. I love watching the Finnish nature change its colours and mood. It's almost meditative to me.

What would you say to someone who's trying to decide whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

I would tell them that if they're looking for a university which truly cares about their well being and learning, and not just their productivity or ability to run a rat race, Tampere is the perfect choice.
