Nikolai Sladkov - student ambassador
Student Ambassador Nikolai Sladkov had been dreaming of moving to Tampere a couple of years. In August 2018, he finally made it happen.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here originally?

I have moved to Tampere in August of 2018 after being accepted to a bachelor’s degree programme at TAMK. Doing that was my number one goal ever since I have visited this beautiful city a couple of years prior.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

I am currently on my 2nd year of studies in Energy and Environmental Engineering. Seeing the rise of environmental problems in my home city I could not just sit and wait, so I decided to learn how to deal with them effectively and TAMK seemed to be the best place to do it.

What do you like about Tampere and Finland the most?

I like how Tampere manages to combine the best of both large and active city and calming and beautiful nature. It helps maintaining a balance in a busy student life and makes Tampere a very pleasant city to live in. In regard to Finnish people, I like how most of them value honesty and trust, so I always know that I can rely on someone when I need it.

What about your hobbies here in Tampere or in Finland?

Tampere is a city of many activities so in my limited time here I have already managed to try out everything from “Geocaching” to sword fighting.  However, boardgames is what will forever be in my heart along with writing my own songs with friends.

What would you say to someone deciding whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

I would say: go for it! Although moving to a new city, let alone new country can be a daunting experience, in the end it is totally worth it.  Tampere is a home to students from all around the world so you will get to know all sorts of people.  Moreover, Finnish learning environment is known to be one of the best in the world and having spent a year here now, I can totally agree with that.
