Quality management at TAMK
TAMK’s quality policy
TAMK's vision is to be the leading UAS in Finland for global education. As a working life oriented UAS we make sure our students have the best learning possibilities and we participate in research, development and innovation to develop regional working life. The quality system supports and directs implementation of TAMK's vision and objectives as an integrated part of the management system and daily operation.
The key quality management principle is continuous evaluation and development of operations based on received feedback and follow-up data. The aim is to promote an operating culture which enables evaluation of personal work and operation as well as related continuous learning and development. Evaluation is made and any necessary corrective actions are taken immediately, or as an integrated part of the annual internal performance agreement process, which involves TAMK as a whole.
The Quality Management and Business Planning unit reports on functionality of the quality system annually to the Higher Education Council and regularly to the Working Group on Quality Management and the extended Executive Group. A description of the quality system and all operational guidelines can be found in the Tampere Universities community’s intranet. Quality management is discussed actively in a variety of forums. TAMK's quality work is based on the principles of openness, cooperation, sharing, mutual dependency and honesty.
TAMK's quality system is a complete entity comprising the procedures, processes and systems used throughout TAMK to maintain and develop the quality of its education, research, development and other operation.
Quality management is continuous evaluation and target-oriented development of operations based on received feedback and follow-up data. Quality work covers the whole organisation, and all members of the higher education community participate in it in accordance with their work, studies or other operation.
TAMK applies the PDSA cycle (Plan, Do, Study, Act) as its framework for development of operations and quality management. The aim is to improve operations and learn as a continuous process.
Quality management responsibilities
Quality management is an integrated part of all TAMK’s operations. The responsibility for quality and its development is shared by all, in accordance with their work tasks and related duties.
The Higher Education Council decides on quality management principles. The president is in charge of the main quality management lines and implementation of the Board’s and Higher Education Council’s decisions in the UAS. The deputy managing director together with the Quality Management and Business Planning unit are in charge of developing the quality system and quality management as a whole.
Developing the quality system and specifying concrete quality management objectives are coordinated by the Working Group on Quality Management, whose members represent different schools, units and students. The working group has special responsibility for evaluating, coordinating, preparing and supporting TAMK’s quality system and its development. Members of the group are called quality coordinators.
The management has a key role in supporting TAMK’s development as an expert organisation and developing TAMK’s operations through quality management. Directors participate in strategy and quality management work in their field of responsibility and are in charge of planning, implementing, following, evaluating and developing their field of responsibility in accordance with the definitions of policy. Heads of degree programmes are in charge of quality management in degree programmes.
Students participate in development of teaching and TAMK’s operation by giving course and student feedback (=students’ right and obligation, Degree regulations 4§) and by participating in the work of different working groups and TAMK’s Board. Students also take part in development projects and experiments.
Commitments and evaluations
Tampere University of Applied Sciences is committed to national and international quality management principles. TAMK passed a quality system audit by an international audit group in 2016 (valid until 14 March 2022).

TAMK is preparing for the next audit.
TAMK participates in field-specific evaluations and accreditations. The Degree Programme in Environmental Engineering was accredited in 2018 (see report).
In addition to external evaluations and audits, self-evaluation is an integrated part of TAMK’s quality system and annual performance agreement process. The quality system data is used extensively in developing and directing TAMK’s operation.
Tampere University of Applied Sciences is committed to key national and international principles of responsible science. The university of applied sciences complies with the higher education community’s open science policy and the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity’s guidelines and is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Tampere region.
