Studying at Music Academy
TAMK has about 220 degree-level music students. Tampere Conservatoire has approximately 80 music students in vocational upper-secondary education. In addition, the Music Academy premises are used by Tampere Conservatoire's Music School, where about 1350 music-lovers of all ages practise some form of music-related hobby.
Music studies at TAMK focus on classical music, drama and theatre music, and music pedagogy. For music students, learning-by-doing is an essential part of the pedagogical approach, and taking part in diverse high-level artistic activities is central to the learning process. Collaboration between TAMK and Tampere Conservatoire enables them to put on large-scale orchestral, choral, operatic, and other musical productions. However, the two institutions are separately and independently responsible for the music education they provide.
There is something going on at the Music Academy from the early morning to the evening. Students can use the campus facilities independently and work on their instrumental skills. The Music Academy organizes concerts almost daily; these concerts are free of charge to students.
There are also other facilities for music studies in the vicinity, including a high-tech studio for developing advanced piano-playing skills. This so-called piano pedagogy laboratory is unique in Finland.
One of the units of Tampere University Library serves you at the Music Academy. Resources that can be loaned from the Library include sheet music, recordings, books, and magazines. There is also a reference section for sheet music. You can find more information about the services on the library website.
The Music Academy also maintains a performer bank. Students can register with the bank, and through this service, different line-ups of music students and teachers can be booked for different occasions.
There is a café at the Music Academy lobby. Also, several restaurants and cafés can be found nearby in the Pyynikki area.
Music Academy has its own part-time ICT support. In addition, TAMK's helpdesk is available.
