Student Ambassador Simon Marc Skovsgaard Sørensen comes from Denmark. He has been living in Tampere since 2016.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here originally?

I have been living in Tampere since January 1st 2016, so a bit more than 2 and a half years. I moved here because of my boyfriend, a Finn that I met in Copenhagen in the early 2015. We had a long distant relationship going on for nearly a year and found our lives more easy if one of us moved to the other’s country. In our case I was working and he was studying here at Proacademy, so it seemed fair to let him finish his degree and I would move to Finland, where I soon after moving applied to study at the university of applied sciences.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

I study International Business and this is my 3rd year I am soon ready to begin the final stage of my studying journey: my thesis. I chose IB because studying business already had been on my mind before I moved to Finland. Through the university website I found a lot of information about the studies and I thought the education seemed promising.

What do you most like about Tampere and Finland?

The nature! In Denmark most of the country has been turned into agriculture and there is not many older forests left, so living here is like a fairytale. Everywhere you look there is a tree – even in the city center. It is amazing to see how the seasons change so rapidly and turns everything into different colours, and not to forget the freshness of the air.

What about your hobbies in Tampere or in Finland?

I have been participating in dance classes the last couple of years, which has been a great feeling of taking up an old hobby that I have not practiced for about 8 years, and then being welcomed in a different city, and a different country so openly. Everyone has always been very positive and helpful whenever I have asked for help, which is what I believe is the key point for a good sustainable community.

What would you say to someone deciding whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

Tampere is a perfect combination of a great student community, choice of educational path and everything you need from a city. It is safe in every aspect, and it is a very beautiful place to live.
