"It is not an overstatement to say Tampere is the best place to study and live"- a student ambassador story
Tell us about yourself and your studies
I am from Islamabad, Pakistan and I have been in the beautiful city of Tampere since August 2021. My major is in Security and Safety Management (Safety Management and Engineering). After completing my Bachelors in Civil Engineering from Pakistan, I worked for four years in the development sector, during which I realized that the world is in need of an innovative and future-orientated evolution to tackle the complex and ever-changing environment of security, safety and fragility and I wanted to contribute and play my part in this evolution.
So, after perusing a number of degree programs in different universities, my heart was set on Tampere University because the learning outcomes of the degree program aligned perfectly with the goals I had in mind for pursuing safety management and engineering.
Since my degree is an international degree program, I have had the privilege of interacting with so many wonderful people, their cultures and their lives. I find everyone to be hard working, fun and welcoming. The kindness and the positivity that radiates from my peers here is what makes the world a much better place!
Can you share us your experiences in Tampere and Finland
This will not be an overstatement if I say that Tampere and Finland is indeed the best place to study and live. Why? Because they treat the students here with utmost respect and every one ensures that as a student, you live a comfortable life here. As a student you have access to the crème de la crème facilities - not only in the university but in the city and everywhere else. So far, I have been pleasantly surprised by the student discounts here to be quite honest. Fun fact: Did you know that Tampere is considered to be the most student friendly city of Finland? The facilities that I have access to, as a student, exceed all expectations I had about studying in Finland.
Besides school, I am an active member of a club association called ESN - INTO. You will find me hanging out at the club room when I am not in class. Why? Because I love meeting new people and making friends and all the club and guild rooms here in Tampere University welcome all students to hang around, play games, eat snacks and have fun! Other than socializing, I love exploring nature - my favorite being the lakes (no surprises there). The lakes here at Tampere have a magic effect on you i.e. they tend to leave you speechless.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about studying and living in Tampere?
My advice to international students would be to keep their spirits high. While planning your move and the exciting things you'd do in Tampere, also plan for getting over certain cultural shocks. But don't worry, remember: nothing worth having comes easy. So set realistic expectations and hope for the best!
