The History, Philosophy and Literary Studies Unit (HiFi) is an umbrella for research and teaching in humanities at the Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC). The academics in the three disciplines represented at HiFi are conducting high-quality international research and offering research-based education. In addition to numerous projects, HiFi hosts the Academy of Finland-funded Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the History of Experiences (HEX) and two research centres: Narrare Centre for Interdisciplinary Narrative Studies and Tampere Centre for Classical, Medieval and Early Modern Studies (TRIVIUM).

HiFi provides education on the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels with the Degree Programme in History, Degree Programme in Philosophy and Degree Programme in Literary Studies each including both Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes. HiFi also offers subject teacher training in the school subjects of history, philosophy, ethics and literature, and doctoral training in the doctoral programmes in Philosophy, History and Literary Studies.

Because the disciplines represented at HiFi are a unique combination providing excellent multidisciplinary advantages, our teachers and researchers are well-known and highly esteemed experts of their fields in Finland and internationally. HiFi’s expertise focuses on history, the present, and the timeless questions of philosophy.
