Student Ambassador Biju Thankachan comes from India. He has been living in Tampere since 2013.

How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here originally?

I came to Tampere in August 2013 for the Master's Degree Programme in Human-Technology Interaction. I already had a background in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and was looking for a programme which is not very technical, and Human-Technology Interaction programme offered me the perfect balance between Technology and Human centered studies.

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

Currently I am a Doctoral Student and a researcher in Interactive Technology. My research focuses on making technology available to people on the south of Digital Divide. There are over a billion people for whom technology is still inaccessible, and my research aims to contribute a tiny drop to make technology accessible to them.

What do you most like about Tampere and Finland?

Tampere offers the best of both worlds, small yet there are plenty of options to explore, be it the lakes, bars, libraries, nature. Tampere is less crowded (and being from India, I know what I am talking about), people are super nice and helpful. The same can be said about Finland in general.

What about your hobbies in Tampere or in Finland?

I like to read, mostly non-fiction. There are number of libraries where I can spend time reading. There are plenty of options for second hand books. I also play badminton and floorball, and the local clubs have been very welcoming to include a novice like me. The other thing I like to do is to just take a long walk, without any destination, into the woods or the unknown. It is a very refreshing experience.

What would you say to someone deciding whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

I would highly recommend Tampere as a study destination. The number of student centric activities are innumerable.
