How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here?

I have lived in Tampere for one year only but I already managed to fall in love with this wonderful city. Back in Russia, as a teacher of German and English languages, I was always looking for opportunities to improve my qualifications. When I found out that Tampere University offers a Masters programme in Teacher education, I realized that the programme is exactly what I need. So, here I am)

What subject do you study and how did you choose it?

My master`s programme is Teacher Education it has been designed for those who already have their teaching background and want to professionally develop further. My choice of this master`s programme was not accidental: the Faculty of Education in Tampere is one of the best known in Finland as well as in Northern Europe and it plays an essential role in developing a truly modern concept of education in Europe and in promoting intercultural communication of educators. Tampere university offers a wide range of courses and course-related-skill trainings which are very instrumental for the teacher`s profession. My main subjects are qualitative and quantitative research and all the disciplines that help to make my master]s thesis significant and thorough (such as advanced research process, master thesis seminar etc).

(editor's note: from 2020 onwards the programme is called Teaching, Learning and Media Education)

What do you like most about Tampere and Finland? What has been the most surprising or different thing about living here?

Most of all I like the people in Tampere – everybody is so friendly and helpful! From my landlady to the shop assistants in small corner shops. Teachers at the University are highly-qualified and always ready to help in case of any difficulties. I also like the international context in which I study and live in Tampere. My group mates are from all over the world and everybody is able to have the sense of belonging studying at the University of Tampere.

What are your hobbies in Tampere? Have you tried out any new hobbies after coming here?

I haven`t tried any new hobbies yet, but I really enjoy walking around the beautiful city and discovering amazing places in Tampere (like Pyynikki Tower, Tampere cathedral, numerous green parks and the Moomin museum for sure!! As for me, the latter one is the main place of interest in Tampere. Later I can explain my reasons to you ;). Working (reading and writing) and preparing for classes in the University library is also a kind of hobby)

What would you say to someone who's trying to decide whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?

I would say “go ahead, just do it!” to everybody planning to study in Tampere. This city is definitely the right place as the nature is excellent, people are hospitable and cooperative, and all the knowledge you will receive studying at the University is relevant and vital. And one more thing which I personally like most – not only students but also university teachers are international, which definitely contributes to the unique multicultural atmosphere and provides an opportunity of receiving a really versatile and multidimensional education.
