The electrical engineering unit is an expertise hub of some 150 faculty and staff members. Our education and research activities build on a profound understanding of electrical and electromagnetic phenomena and their modelling and applications. ICT systems and electrical energy systems form the main application umbrellas. The activities comprise the following three main research and education areas:

  • Electronics and Embedded Systems
  • Electrical Energy Engineering
  • Communications Engineering and Radio Systems

Electronics and Embedded Systems

Electronics enables the modern society. Our goal is to develop new technologies and methods for manufacturing electronics in sustainable, economical, and globally efficient processes. Our research includes a wide range of activities on electronics and embedded systems, including printed electronics, thin-film devices and circuits, low-level software, and system design in industrial, healthcare, and consumer environments. We investigate and develop solutions related to ambient intelligent, sensors, user interfaces, wearable electronics including smart textiles and health patches, stretchable electronics, structural electronics, IoT-devices, energy harvesting and storage, low-power applications, and energetic systems.

Electrical Energy Engineering

Electrical energy will have more and more important role as the basis of various energy systems while they are being electrified. Renewable carbon free energy sources have the essential role in mitigating climate change and in preventing climate crisis. Heating, transportation and industrial processes are also increasingly being electrified. The main aims of Smart Grids is to enable energy and resource efficient and sustainable electrical energy system and market by integrating distributed intermittent renewable electricity energy production, energy storages, electric vehicles and demand response as part the whole power system as one of the most critical infrastructure of the whole society.

We actively research and develop new solutions based on strong electrotechnical knowledge in the fields of electromechanics, power electronics, high voltage engineering, and power systems and electricity market. In research projects, we actively cooperate with the industry and other universities, utilizing our versatile research and laboratory environments.

Communications Engineering and Radio Systems

Modern information society and the ongoing digitalization trend of different industries build on efficient and reliable communication networks. We carry out high-impact basic science and applied research related to the development of new data communication and networking concepts, processing methods and tools for electrical and electromagnetic communication systems, building the basis e.g. for 5G and 6G mobile radio networks, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and the Industrial Internet. Applying new wireless technologies in different vertical application domains, such as autonomous moving machines and robots, self-driving cars and large drone fleets, is also one central theme. Additionally, developing new high-accuracy radio positioning and radio-based sensing/radar methods is another strong research track. We host world-class research infrastructure, comprising e.g. campus-wide 5G test network and state-of-the-art RF measurement laboratories up to 100 GHz. We collaborate actively with global mobile communications industry as well as with numerous high-rank universities at different continents.
