Degree Programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media

Information Studies and Interactive Media educates experts for the fast changing information society.

In the Degree Programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media it is possible to take both the Bachelor's degree and the Master's degree. On the Bachelor's degree programme students can choose different competence areas. In the Master's degree programme students can concentrate either on Information Studies and Interactive Media in general or on Records and Archives Management, Internet and Game Studies or Databases and Information Retrieval. In the Degree Programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media students may also take optional studies and thus develop their knowledge and expertise.

The teaching in Information Studies and Interactive Media is based on research where the emphasis is on information and media practices, information retrieval and game studies. The teaching takes a theoretical point of view on e.g. the seeking, organizing, transmitting and restoring of information, and questions and user cultures of interactive media with their changes, planning and implementation. The teaching takes into account the challenges of the future and equips students with tools for continuous self-improvement.

The Degree Programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media offers graduates wide opportunities for finding employment in the information profession. Graduates work in planning, development and expert tasks in e.g. libraries, archives, net services and game companies, and research centres. Working in the fast developing information profession requires profound conceptual and theoretical knowledge combined with a readiness to apply knowledge and to keep up to date in the changing profession.

Learning Outcomes

The aim is to train students capable of approaching a group of information society phenomena from a professional and research perspective.

On completion of the Bachelor’s degree students will:

  • have a command of the main concepts and be able to form an overall picture of the field
  • be able to follow the development of the field and to develop themselves into experts
  • have a command of the basics of scientific thinking and scientific working methods
  • be able to apply and assess the information acquired in working life
  • be capable of communicating orally and in writing on their own fields in various forums
  • be able to continue their studies in education leading to a higher academic degree

On completion of the Master’s programme students will:

  • have a command of extensive and specialized concepts, method and knowledge in their respective fields
  • be capable of scientific problem solving and its reporting
  • be capable of working in expert, development and managerial tasks in application areas in informatics and interactive media
  • comprehend the changing nature of the field and be ready to develop their own expertise and knowledge
  • be capable of communicating and of active interaction in scientific and other forums
  • be able to continue their studies in scientific postgraduate training
