The Degree Programme in Journalism and Communication deals with issues concerning media, communication and journalism. It offers career options in many expert tasks in communication and media; possible future titles could be journalist, photojournalist, public relations officer and trainer in communication. The Bachelor’s programme offers a broad base on the research of media and communication. In addition, students can obtain a deeper understanding of one of the four study modules: journalism, photojournalism, speech communication and media and cultural studies. Bachelor's studies lead to the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences. Master’s studies are based on the specialization acquired in Bachelor’s degree as Master’s programmes options are journalism, visual journalism and speech communication. Master's studies lead either to the degree of Master of Social Sciences in journalism and visual journalism or Master of Arts in speech communication.
Learning Outcomes
On a general level the Bachelor's degree provides students with a sound grounding in journalism and at least one of the other subjects offered on the degree programme. In their Bachelor's studies students can orientate towards the options they wish to take in their Master's studies and so achieve sufficient knowledge and skill for this. Students will also learn to follow the development in their respective fields and acquire the capability for scientific thinking and working with research. They will acquire good communication skills. On completion of the studies in journalism students will possess the minimal competence for work in journalism, as reporters or photojournalists.
The broad base of the degree programme at Bachelor's level is realised in two ways. First of all, students have the opportunity to study different subjects at the level of intermediate subjects. Secondly they can incorporate a wide range of free cohoice studies from among the studies offered by other schools.
During Master's studies the objective is to impart to the students special expertise in the content selected for Master's studies and in professional practices. Other overall objectives in Master's studies are to take studies further from the Bachelor's level, to impart the skills needed to operate in working life as an expert in one's own field and also the capability for scientific postgraduate studies.
In addition to the overall objectives each Master's Programme has its own characteristic profile:
Master's Programme in Journalism: The objective is to equip students with strong professional competence to serve in journalistic tasks, in the press, radio, television and net media. Professional competence also extends to understanding how society and media culture operate and the role of media in the construction of societal reality.
Master's Programme in Visual Journalism: On completion students will be able to work as press photographers. They will have a command of various subareas of photography (such as individual and sports photography and reporting) and studio lighting, be familiar with the rudiments of layout and net publishing and capable of producing short net videos. Visual journalists will also be able to understand the workings of society and media culture and also media as part of the societal reality.
Master's Programme in Speech Communication: Students will be capable of assessing and analysing various interaction situations and of communication effectively and appropriately and adhering to the ethical principles of communication. They will be able to pan and deliver teaching in speech communication and to apply speech communication expertise as required in various professional tasks, for example in consulting, information dissemination or human relations work.
Master's Programme in Media Culture: On completion students will have an extensive perspective on the changing fields of media, communication and culture. They will be able to follow the ongoing processes of change and to produce such knowledge which analyses the ongoing changes and provide tools for various actors in the field to exert influence on the developmental directions in the future.
Master's Programme in Theatre and Drama Research: Students will learn to serve as experts in art research and in culture, theatre and events communications. They will be capable of high-quality information dissemination on art and culture and of conveying to the public phenomena of the performing arts and culture. After Master's studies students will be able to serve in communications, administrative and information dissemination capacities as journalists, information officers, and content producers specialized in the performing arts and culture and in other artistic fields.
