The Degree Programme in German Language, Culture and Translation offers a Bachelor's Programme in German Language, Culture and Translation, a Master's Programme in German Language and Culture as well as a Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies. The general language proficiency level for students accepted for the Bachelor's degree programme is B1–B2 (CEFR). Students in the Bachelor's degree programme can specialize either in German language and culture or in German translation and interpreting. Basic studies focus on improving students' language competence and cultural knowledge. Intermediate studies then concentrate on acquiring a knowledge of the academic requirements in the Master's programme, as well as enhancing language and communication skills. Studies in language and culture centre on the structure of German and on the literatures and cultures of German-speaking countries, whereas studies in translation and interpreting specialize in translation and communication studies, language and culture. Students specializing in translation and interpreting are required to have an excellent command of Finnish, and they are offered a separate study module of Finnish both in the Bachelor's and in the Master's degree programmes. In the course of their Master's degree studies in German language and culture, students acquire an extensive knowledge of the German language and culture and relevant research, as well as obtain comprehensive information on German-speaking countries. Students may specialize in language teaching, business communication or literature and culture, or participate in the degree programme for language teachers to obtain teaching qualifications. In the Master's Programme in Multilingual Communication and Translation Studies, students can specialize in languages for special purposes, literary and audiovisual translation, or interpreting. Upon completing their Master's degree, students have an excellent command of German, a proficiency in communication skills and cultural knowledge, and a competence in applying academic knowledge in practice. They also have the necessary qualifications for post-graduate studies. Proficient German users are employed, for example, in teaching, economic life, administration, the media, and translation and interpreting. The degree programme is intended primarily for Finnish-speaking students. The Bachelor degree programme in particular includes courses that are taught only in Finnish (these include compulsory translation, language and communication studies as well as optional courses).
