Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student can analyze sensor requirements and their design parameters. Student can design intelligent sensors and understands the concept of semantic sensor networks. Student is able to design application that utilizes consumer-grade inertial sensors.

Content

1. Sensor requirements, design parameters. Intelligent sensors.      
2. Inertial navigation principles, coordinate frames, errors.   Tranformations between coordinate frames.   
3. Self-contained sensors: accelerometers and gyroscopes. Magnetometers, barometric altimeters.Sensor errors, Allan variance.  1/f noise   
4. Sensor APIs on smartphones.     
5. Methods: Kalman filter, Least Squares for sensor calibration.  Map-matching, indexing   
6. Applications: Pedestrian Dead Reckoning, orientation (UI), motion mode classification, games.   North finding with MEMS gyroscopes

Additional information about prerequisites
Students are expected to be familiar with basic matrix algebra. Advisable background knowledge includes familiarity with sensor technologies (eg. ASE-3036 Microsensors) and positioning methods (eg. ELT-46006 Introduction to Satellite Positioning, MAT-60606 Mathematics for Positioning).
