Learning Outcomes

After passing the course the student can link changes in the genotype level to changes in the phenotype level. The student will have an understanding of in silico metabolic models in metabolic engineering and their interplay with in vivo methods. The student will be able to apply metabolic engineering to different problems in modern industrial microbe strain improvement. The course will include a practical case example during which the student will carry out a short laboratory project exemplifying the power of metabolic engineering. The student will obtain up to date information about the latest proceedings in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Methods in metabolic engineering: in silico
2. Methods in metabolic engineering: in vivo. Tools and methods for genetic engineering in bacteria.  Synthetic biology Protein engineering and evolution
3. Microbial metabolism   Metabolic pathways
4. Gene expression  Regulation of gene expression
5. Case example: in silico and in vivo laboratory

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The grade will be determined on the basis of an exam, seminar work, and written laboratory report. To pass the course with a grade 1 the student will have to score at least 50 % of the maximum points in the exam. A good understanding the core content will suffice to a grade 3. In order to earn a grade 4 or 5 the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of complementary knowledge.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
