Requirements

Exam & exercises. Additional literature study/research project needed as a post-graduate course.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

Special course on multicarrier (OFDM, OFDMA, SC-FDMA, FBMC, DMT) and multiantenna/MIMO techniques and their applications to terrestrial radio and TV transmission, mobile communication systems, and digital subscriber line modems. After completing the course, a student has in-depth knowledge about multicarrier and multiantenna techniques and their applications in current and emerging broadband communication systems.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. BASICS OF MULTICARRIER MODULATION - OFDM principle; - Effects of channel distortions (channel response, nonlinearities, phase noise) on the performance; - Adaptive bit-loading, waterfilling principle; - Peak-to-average power ratio problem and mitigation methods.
2. SYNCHRONIZATION AND CHANNEL ESTIMATION: - Frequency synchronization; - Symbol synchronization; - Pilot based and data aided channel estimation.
3. DIVERSITY AND MULTIANTENNA TECHNIQUES: - Coded OFDM and frequency diversity; - Receiver antenna diversity; - Basics of space-time coding and MIMO-OFDM.
4. OTHER RELATED CONCEPTS: - Multicarrier CDMA; - SC-FDMA, DFT-spread OFDM and frequency-domain equalization in single-carrier transmission; - Pulse shaping based MC systems. - Filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) techniques
5. APPLICATIONS: - Digital broadcasting: DAB, DVB-T/H/T2, ISDB-T; - WLAN: 802.11a/g/n/ac; - WiMAX: 802.16; - 3GPP-LTE/LTE-Advanced; - ADSL, VDSL. - Power-line communications (PLC)

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
