Osaamistavoitteet

After the course the student is able to understand the underlying thermodynamic and kinetic background controlling the formation of different structures during manufacturing of materials or structural or compositional changes in the use in different temperatures and environments. The student is able to understand and use existing thermodynamic data in designing new processing routes or in interpreting the step which have resulted to obtained structures. Then student understand the background of different graphical presentations of thermodynamic data and is able to use such the most common working tools and existing computer codes. In addition to thermodynamics the student recognizes the main kinetic processes controlling the final structure and properties of processed material or the rate of different degradation processes. After the course the student is able to identify possible uses of thermodynamic and kinetic data and has basic understanding and knowledge to use these everyday materials problems

2. Using of thermodynamics principles to estimate equilibrium state of materials, effect of thermodynamic on structures and properties of materials.   Thermodynamics of nonstoichiometric compounds. Application of thermodynamics in defect chemistry   
3. Graphical presentation of thermodynamic data, Phase diagrams, stability diagrams, Ellinham diagram, Pourbaix-diagram. Interpretation and use of such data  Construction of the diagrams   
4. Thermodynamic data bases and commercial thermodynamic calculation programs and use of these in practical processes  Basic use of HSC program  Expert use of HSC program 
5. Kinetics of phase transformations   Basics of diffusion  Kinetics in coating processes, such as chemical vapour deposition and its use in process development 
6. Diffusion in practical materials processes, solid state reactions  Diffusion in sintering, Diffusional creep, Diffusion in solid state joining
