Additional information

Students have to be present on the first day of the course and on time to be sure of retaining their place. When a course is over-subscribed, i.e. there are more sign-ups than places on the course, then we enrol the required number of students according to the following criteria: 1) TUT students for whom the course is compulsory 2) students' position at TUT (degree students have priority) 3) the number of 'study points' the students have 4) the time of the sign-up. When a course is over-subscribed, i.e. there are more sign-ups than places on the course, then we enrol the required number of students according to the sign-up time and target group. Students on the sign-up / waiting list have to be present on the first day of the course to be sure of retaining their place.

Active participation in lectures (75% attendance), assignments and successful performance in all parts of the final examination.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will learn the basics of Finnish. They will be able to introduce themselves using short and simple-structured Finnish expressions. Students will also be able to understand and use vocabulary for family, foods and drinks.

Content

1. Vocabulary: greetings and introducing oneself, numbers, the days of the week, months and telling time, family, buying and paying, foods and drinks.     
2. Listening/speaking: recognizing the sounds and understanding simple phrases. Students will learn to talk about themselves using simple expressions.     
3. Reading: texts on topics covered in the course.     
4. Writing: short texts on topics covered in the course.     
5. Grammar: verb types, consonant gradation, the genitive case, the partitive case and the local cases in singular. Making questions and forming negative sentences.     

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

Students must attend 75% of the lessons to be able to take part in the final exam. Course grade is based on the final exam which includes four subtests: speaking (25% of the grade), listening comprehension (25%), writing, grammar and vocabulary (25%) and reading comprehension (25%). Students must pass all the subtests to pass the course.

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
