Learning Outcomes

This course educates the students on the main principles of robust power handling and management, together with related embedded communication and control functions in modern electric power supplies for systems like mobile phones, portable computers, electric vehicles (EVs), as well as wind and solar energy stations. In focus are the main parameters, principles of operation, design and safety of units based on networks of energy storages, especially Batteries of Electrochemical Cells and SuperCapacitors. From the basics of charging and discharging with electric energy, and related measurement and monitoring, the course leads the students to understand the need and the way of operation of a network of low power monolithic CMOS DC-DC up/down convertors, sophisticated cells balancers, energy re-distribution units, controlled by battery management system (BMS). The student will also be introduced to the main ways for designing and maintaining novel battery systems based on existing low cost components available on the market and how to establish a robust embedded communications within them.
