Learning Outcomes

This course is taught every 2nd year; taught during 2013-2014 The course focuses on the principles and techniques of mobile location and navigation, with emphasis on satellite navigation systems. Also cellular-based positioning, WLAN-based positioning and Signal Of Opportunity (SoO)-based positioning are to be addressed. After the course, a student will have in-depth knowledge about positioning and navigation techniques. He or she will also gain knowledge about location based services and future of wireless navigation.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Basics of signal processing and channel models in the context of navigation (digital modulation types, multiple access schemes with focus on CDMA, path losses, channel impairments, etc)  Advanced path loss models
2. Introduction to satellite navigation systems, GNSS concept and architecture  Details of certain GNSS/NSS systems under development
3. GNSS signals and spectra  Theoretical modeling of power spectral densities (PSD) and autocorrelation functions
4. Acquisition and tracking in GNSS (basic structures and advanced structures, including multipath mitigation and unambiguous approaches for Galileo signals)
5. Indoor GNSS -challenges and solutions
6. GNSS receiver front-end architectures  Detailed front-end sheet calculations
7. Cellular-based location algorithms (focus on GSM and 3G)  Details about implememtation of cellular-based location techniques
8. WLAN-based location algorithms - basic approaches  Fingerprinting methods
9. Signals of Opportunity (SoO) concept and SoO-based location algorithms  Details about specific SoO (signal structures, architectures, etc)

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The assessment is based on an exam (targeted to measuring the knowledge gained in the core contents) and an individual project pertaining to topics learned during the course. Also bonus points can be gathered during exercises and lectures.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Implementation Description Methods of instruction Implementation
ELT-46206 2013-01 The course focuses on the principles and techniques of mobile location and navigation, with emphasis on satellite navigation systems. Also cellular-based positioning, WLAN-based positioning and Signal Of Opportunity (SoO)-based positioning are to be addressed. As a requisite to pass the course, each student will have to make a seminar presentation (in groups of 2 or 3 students) on a chosen topic among a list of topics. After the course, a student will have in-depth knowledge about positioning and navigation techniques. He or she will also gain knowledge about location based services and future of wireless navigation. It is highly recommended to take this course jointly with ELT-46106 Satellite Navigation Receivers
