Learning Outcomes

To deepen the understanding of plastic deformation mechanisms, dislocations and their interactions, and the role of plastic deformation in fatigue. To understand how macroscopic properties and behavior are related to the defect structures. To learn the use of modern materials testing techniques, in particular in high strain rate testing.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Elastic and plastic deformation. Dislocations in plastic deformation.
2. Thermal and athermal processes limiting plastic deformation.
3. Influence of deformation rate on mechanical properties of materials.
4. Modern materials testing methods.
5. Cyclic strain hardening and fatigue.

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The final grade will be determined by the final examination and the report based on the exercises. The examination will measure the students understanding on the theoretical background of the materials scientific phenomena discussed during the course. The questions in the examination measure 'understanding', not remembering by heart, so an A+ student must have understood the main topics of the course. The exercises and reporting on the other hand measure the students ability to use the acquired knowledge and apply it to solve and explain experimental data. The reporting also measures the student's ability to read and understand topical research papers and to relate new information to the experimental data.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
