FYS-7106 Introduction to Soft Matter Physics, 3-5 cr

Additional information

For the academic year 2013-2014, the contents of this course is being considered to be revised. This revision would be done in a manner where the role of physics would be more concretely accounted for in describing the processes and phenomena discussed in the course. At the same time, the course provides two alternating sizes. The larger one (5 cu) covers the whole material of the course. In the smaller one (3 cu) the depth of the material discussed in the course is easier, and the number and the difficulty of exercises is less challenging than in the full course. In the same spirit, the exam of the shorter (3 cu) course will be easier than in the full (5 cu) course. The course will be given primarily in English. If all the students attending the course are Finns, then Finnish can be the language of choice.

Learning Outcomes

After passing the course, the student will have basic knowledge about the topics discussed in the course. These include, in particular, the structure and dynamics of soft matter systems, the interactions operating in soft matter, the processes and phenomena taking place therein, and the physical laws governing the processes. Using these pieces of knowledge the student will be able to unravel some relevant problems related to the physical features of soft matter.
