TST-90006 Orientation to Doctoral Studies, 3 cr

Additional information

Students complete the course at their own pace keeping in mind, however, the deadline set by the Faculty Council for the completion of the course in conjunction with processing the post-graduate study application. The course enrolment is continuously open in the POP system. Students can sign- up and start the course anytime. The contact lectures are given on periods 2-3. Depending on the point of applying for the doctoral studies, students can choose if they prefer to attend the lectures, view them online or combine these two options. Beyond the lecture periods, students can only view the recorded lectures from the POP. The assignments i.e. the literature review and research scheme should be conducted in close cooperation with the supervisor and possible instructor of the dissertation work.

Requirements

In order to pass the course, the student must carry out three acceptable components within the given deadline: 1) lecture diary essays from two compulsory seminars and from two elective seminars, 2) approved literature review and 3) research scheme. See the course instructions about completing these requirements from below under "Course implementations" TST-90006 2013-01 (> "Materials" > files "Instructions for TST-90006" and "Suoritusohjeet TST-90006").
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

This course is an introduction to conducting dissertation research and pursuing doctoral studies. After completing the course, doctoral students will know how to prepare research plans and literature reviews. They will be familiar with the steps towards a research career, the process of critical appraisal and the basic concepts of scientific philosophy and ethics. They will possess the competence to evaluate the validity and reliability of research findings. In addition, the course will provide doctoral students with the opportunity to develop their scientific communication skills and improve their spoken and written English. This course is a general prerequisite to all post-graduate students in the Doctoral Programme of Computing and Electrical Engineering.
