Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning

Lectures deliver the basic principles and illustrate them with examples. Auditorium exercises apply the theory on main practical importance cases, using hand-held analysis and further training on the CAD tools. In the laboratory exercises students will investigate by experiments with pre-build measurement setups.

Learning outcomes

This B.Sc. level course educates the students on the main principles of robust management, together with related embedded communication and control functions, in modern electric power supplies for systems like mobile phones, portable computers, electric vehicles (EVs), as well as wind and solar energy stations. In focus are the main parameters, principles of operation, design and safety of units based on networks of energy storages, namely Batteries of Electrochemical Cells and Supercapacitors. From the basics of charging and discharging with electric energy, and related measurement and monitoring, the course leads the students to understand the need and the way of operation of a network of low power monolithic CMOS DC-DC up/down convertors, sophisticated cells balancers, energy re-distribution units, controlled by a battery management system (BMS). The student will also be introduced to the main ways for designing and maintaining novel battery systems based on existing low cost components available on the market and how to establish a robust embedded communications within them. Later, an additional M.Sc. level course is planned to be offered in the curriculum which carries deeper and more scientific analysis of the topic area and leads to skills needed for complete engineering design of such devices. * Contents of the course are tailored to satisfy various levels of interest and applications areas. Indeed it will be awarding more knowledge with more credit units, from 5 to 8, depending on the amount of Lectures, Homeworks and Laboratory Exercises taken. In the content list below, the topics leading to higher number of credits are indicated with a star (*) at the beginning. Those topics are also further developed in the subsequent course at MSc level.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. SUPPLYING ENERGY FOR MOBILE DEVICES AND MACHINES: Introducing the main ideas, components and sub-systems which provide the energy for functioning of electrically powered devices, tools and vehicles. Defining the communication flows within/between the subsystems.
2. PRIMARY AND RECHARGEABLE ELECTROCHEMICAL CELLS: A versatile introduction to Primary and Secondary (Rechargeable) electrochemical cells. Among them Alkaline, CdNi, NiMH, Li-Ion/Poly, and other more advanced types such as ZnAg. After defining the main parameters and characteristics of the cells, then the devices for their charging, monitoring and control are introduced and made familiar to the students in lectures, and number of laboratory experiments. * A reference is made to compare with the Super Capacitors as complimentary energy storage units.
3. CHARGING, MONITORING AND CONTROL: Concise introduction to low-power and high-frequency energy conversion units monolithically implementable in modern Nano-Scale CMOS processes, namely Rectifiers, Low power LDO and Low power DC-DC Down- and Up-Conversion Blocks for mobile terminals. * Also modern methods for their control, such as Sliding Mode Control, are presented and studied through Matlab exercises and measurement experiments, too.
4. POWER MANAGEMENT UNITS (PMUs) FOR PHONES AND COMPUTERS: The energy related control and communication within the PMUs of mobile terminal and computer are presented as natural utilization and co-integration of the sub-units already studied in the course: Rectifiers, Chargers, LDOs, DC-DC convertors. * Specific PMUs are presented, discussed and experimented.
5. BMS FOR COMPUTERS, ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND ENERGY STORAGES: The embedded communication system between sub- units of most recent and advanced energy sources like Lithium-based batteries is described and exercised as a concept of Battery Management System (BMS. Energy harvesting, re-distribution and efficiency of the units are analyzed. Starting from the simple Battery Cells Balancers, the students are led to the concept of advanced modular BMS developed for modern computers and electric vehicles, in lectures, exercises and laboratory experiments. * Integrating modular low-voltage BMS into electric vehicle in practice.
