Learning outcomes

The course critically examines processes and systems in entertainment and media production. Gaining understanding in workflows and procedures in media industry enables the understanding of management aspects during production. Based on several different stages in traditional and emerging media domains, production workflows and techniques are presented. Workflows from traditional media and their changing environment, paired with new processes in latest media industry trends are presented. A special focus is given on content creation and related technology, such as asset management, system architectures, information architectures, and involved methods. After this course, the students should understand: 1. Technologies, processes, and workflows of digital productions in specific media domains 2. System architectures, content including its production, and system infrastructures 3. Asset management, creation, metadata, and methods for content creation

Technology supporting digital workflows More in-depth description of the technology, methods and techniques especially required for designing systems with overall digital workflows : - Software tools - Digital workflow modeling - Network technology - Media management architectures - Media server technology - Web deployment principles - Development of digital workflow tools      
3. Methods in multimedia presentations: Typical multimedia presentational tools are introduced. Their principles, software architectures, and how to implement them are explained. Presentations on special devices (fog screen, 3D-TV, ambient devices): - Designing for mobile devices - Introduction in typical design tools (e.g. Macromedia) - Technology behind design tools      
4. Digital film and TV techniques: - Introduction to methods of creating digital film including special effects. Systems architectures in film production: - Special effects - Workflow specifics - Software tools - Designing digital systems for film & TV - Software tools (e.g. Avid, Premiere) - Technology behind design tools      
5. Content Management Systems: - Review of existing multimedia content management systems. What are the demands for these systems? How can they be realized? How does their architecture look like? Professional content management systems: - Database systems - Metadata in content management - Software development of content management systems      
6. Professional 2D and 3D Graphics: Explanation of how to create 2D/3D graphics and the technology behind these tools: - Software tool overview - Technology behind software tools - Architecture - Computer graphics in Film & TV      
7. Selected content driven services: - Presentation of specific application areas where content is created Collaborative content creation: - Internet as global village - eLearning - Entertainment - eBusiness - Television & Film - Designing content for multichannel      

Evaluation criteria for the course

Course assignment (40%) + Course exam (60%). A mandatory requirement for passing the course is active attendance on the course lectures (70% minimum) and exercises (100%).
