Learning outcomes

Student is able to explain the chemical structure and reactivity of fibres, and the properties and behaviour of fibres based on the chemical structure. Student is able to explain the mechanism of diffusion, adsorption and swelling. Student is able to explain the bonding of fibres and colourants.

Content

1. Micro- and nanostructrue of fibres. Cellulose and cellulose derivative fibres. Different polyester, polyamide, acrylic, and polypropylene fibres. Biobased fibres, as PLA, PHB and PTT. Properties of fibres.  Crystal systems Stabilizators and their use.    
2. Thermodynamics and surface chemistry of fibres. Diffusion, adsorption, and swelling in water. The effect of fibre structure on reactivity. Thermodynamics of molecular sorption.   Different adsorption theories.   
3. Colourants insoluble in water. Adsorption properties of fibres. Bonding of non-ionic and ionic colourants. Diffusion phenomena in interaction. Bonding of reactive dyes on cellulose. The use of solvents and swelling agents.  Classification of reactive dyes and different reactive groups. Use of disperse dyes.    
4. Cross-bindings in processing of cellulose. Use of N-methylol compounds. Functional finishes. Antimicrobial finishing agents. Application of plasma technology. Use of enzymes in textile finishing.  Grafting of fibres. Effect of cross-binding compounds. Structure and use of enzymes.
