Completion of several shorter assignments and one longer assignment, as directed by the teacher.

Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning

There will be one optional meeting at the beginning of each course, but then all the work will be carried out in the Moodle environment.

Learning outcomes

Students will receive and internalise up to date information on and a critical view of contemporary UK society and institutions and be able to compare them with those of other countries; they will gain an insight into working life, business, industry and culture in the UK and be able to interpret current issues, develop critical thinking and research skills, practice and develop reading comprehension, listening comprehension and writing skills. By the end of the course students will be capable of researching and writing a competent academic paper in English.

Evaluation criteria for the course

Continuous assessment of 3 shorter assignments and one longer one. The final grade will be derived from all of these, but greater weight will be placed on the final,longer assignment.

KIE-3456 2011-01 Society and State in Moodle: Groups 1-3. The course will be done by distance learning: there will be no contact teaching.        
KIE-3456 2011-02 Society and State in Moodle: Group 2. The course will be done by distance learning: there will be no contact teaching but a meeting will be held on 13th January 2012 2.15-3pm in the multimedia studio in the Language Centre to explain the course and answer any questions. This meeting is not compulsory, however.        
KIE-3456 2011-03 Society and State in Moodle: Group 3. The course will be done by distance learning: there will be no contact teaching but a meeting will be held on 13th January 2012 3pm-3.45pm in the multimedia studio in the Language Centre to explain the course and answer any questions. This meeting is not compulsory, however.        
KIE-3456 2011-04 The Society and State Summer course in Moodle will be done online by distance learning. There are no classroom sessions. It will open on 1st June and finish on 15 August. We will enrol students who are accepted into the course so all you have to do is go to Moodle and if you can access the course you are in. John.
