Requirements

Written examination on the contents of the study groups and exercises.

Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning

In the course advance tasks for lectures are used. The basic principles and essential features are lectured; additional learning will be obtained in laboratory excercises.

Learning outcomes

Basic knowledge on thermodynamics and kinetic factors controlling solid state phase transformations in metals and alloys. Diffusional and diffusionless solid state phase transformations. Practical applications and procedures of heat treatments of metals and alloys.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations.  Practical heat treatments  Utilization of phase transformations in the development of novel materials
2. Diffusion: mechanisms and influencing factors.   Utilization of equilibrium diagrams and Time-Temperature-Transformation diagrams in the design of heat treatments
3. Solidification, principles of nucleation and nucleus growth.  Evaluation of hardenability and its utilization in practice
4. Diffusional phase transformations. Precipitation: mechanisms of nucleation and nucleus growth. Practical heat treatments
5. Diffusionless phase transfomations: massive and martensitic transformations. Bainitic transformation

Evaluation criteria for the course

The evaluation of the course is based on written examination, advance tasks response and on the reports of laboratory excercises.
