Learning outcomes

The course targets new and emerging topics in the field of 3D Media Technology. It will be given by world renowned visiting experts in the field. After the course, the students will have deeper knowledge on the selected topics addressed within the course which will be among the following: binocular vision; multi-camera 3D capture systems; compression and transmission of 3D; stereoscopic and auto-stereoscopic 3D displays; digital holographic image processing.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Binocular vision; how brain perceives depth  Convergence and accomodation  Vision processing paths
2. Single-camera and multi-camera 3D video capture; 3D and epipolar geometry. Structure from stereo; structure from motion. Depth range sensors.   Calibration and rectification of two cameras. Depth estimation.  Calibration and rectification of multiple cameras; Temporally-consistent depth estimation.
3. 3D video representation formats: multiview video; video+depth; view + layered depth; depth-enhanced stereo; multi-view plus multi-depth  Format conversion;   Representation-specific 3D artifacts.
4. Compression of 3D video. Multi-view compression. Compression of depth.Emerging standards for 3D video compression. Transmission of 3D vieo over packet networks. Broadcasting.   Luminance compensation in 3D compression. Error-resilient transmission of 3D video.  3D compression-specific and transmission-specific artifacts and post-filtering.
5. 3D displays. Stereoscopic and autostereoscopic displays.   Display-specific artifacts  Quality measurements for 3D displays
