Requirements

Accepted assignment and final exam.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning outcomes

After completing the course students can use the terminology and the definitions used in the field of biomedical materials science. Students are able to separate the differences between the materials groups and the materials. They can name the most common materials in the field of biomedical materials science. Students can explain the structures, properties and differences of the most common materials as well as explain how and why different materials are used for different clinical applications.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Classifications of medical biomaterials, general issues about materials.   More comprehensive knowledge about the classifications.   Different biomedical materials and the classification according to spesific properties.
2. Interactions of biomaterials with body and biocompatibility.  Interactions of different materials between the different tissues.  Interaction of the tissues to the materials surfaces.
3. Biomaterial groups: Metals, polymers, bioceramics, composites.   Properties of the materials in the materials groups. Clinical use of the materials.   Structures of the materials. The structure related properties and phenomenas in the human body.
