Learning outcomes

After completing the course the student understands the basic principles of acoustics and noise control and can apply them in the profession of a mechanical engineer. The student understands how sound propagates in different environments such as rooms, ducts or open air. The student understands how sound is generated and what type of sound different sources produce. The student will be able to apply techniques of noise insulation and attenuation. The student will be familiar with the basic equipment of sound measurement and measuring techniques.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Basics of technical acoustics: Wave equation and its solution. Reflection, transmission, absorption, diffraction, refraction. Sound sources, describing real sound sources using elementary sources. Duct acoustics. Room acoustics.  Hearing.  Influence of noise on man.
2. Noise insulation and attenuation methods: Insulation solutions, resonators, absorption materials, mufflers and silecers.  End corrections.
3. Sound measurement techniques and equipment: Basic equipment and measuring techniques, frequency analysis. Measurement of sound power.  Reverberation time measurement. Directivity measurement.  Intensity measurement.

Evaluation criteria for the course

The grade is based on points achieved in the exam and exercises. Good achievements in the homework assignments increase the exam score, equivalent to maximum one grade. By mastering the core content satisfactorily, the student receives the grade 3. For obtaining the grade 4, the student must also understand the complementary knowledge. For the grade 5 the student must master the core content well and in addition understand the complementary knowledge.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:
