Learning outcomes

During the course you will gain knowledge of modelling as a tool in studying physiological systems and measurements including design of measurements and devices and part of diagnostic systems. After the course you will know the basics of model construction and use, modelling methods, procedures and some selected applications. You will also gain hands-on experience on applying the modelling in studying physiological systems.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Modelling of physiological systems compared to pure "engineering" problems. Model classes and types for physiological systems. Model-analog, descriptive-predictive, empirical-mathematical. How to build models of physiological systems.
2. Finite element modelling (FEM) in modelling 3D physiological systems: basic principles, techniques and applications. FEM, DFM, BEM.
3. Modelling biological and physiological processes by cellular automata.
4. Forward and inverse problems. Use of models of physiological systems for forward and inverse solutions, a priori information, data, and model
